Let me tell you, Bergdorf’s is not just a, “store”. It’s my home. And not just because I spend most of my hours either there or talking about it, but because it is a one stop shop.

BG has a cafe (Goodman’s), the BG restaurant and lil sweets bar/cafe on 5F. I have had the pleasure to heartily dine at each. And it’s all very good- croissants, fruit, little pastries, delicious meaty dinners, mini quiches, quality coffee, you name it. My favorite part is that BG only serves Voss water- that water that comes in those glass tube containers. Tap water is sooo been-there-drank-that .. and I love it.

I often have small moments of downtime when I am waiting for a specific store associate or waiting for a response on an issue from my supervisor. So having the “do more. as soon as possible.” mindset and standing in an enormous store, I try stuff on! Favorite sections include: the Celine handbag section, the 5F sale section, the Beauty Level and the Burberry trenches.

Fun story actually about the Celine handbag section: I was once there waiting for a floor manager and put this bag on my arm, casually foreseeing my rich future when I would own it 

I know, I know. It’s so beautiful. 

Anyway, when I went to put it back on the shelf a man standing nearby says, “excuse me, can you do that again?”. Wasn’t imagining this to be my first high fashion modeling experience, but hey I’ll take it. Turns out he was looking for a Valentine’s Day present for his wife and was having trouble deciding what bag to buy her so I got to gush about my personal love for the bag and then he bought it! Great because I helped make a sale, terrible because it was the last one in the store. Side note: Sir, marry me? What a good husband.

Cue the cheesefest! No but really, I love the people who work in the store. I don’t know why I underestimated how many people work there but its easily 200, probably more. And sales associates inherently have friendly outgoing personalities so we get along grand! The security people on the other hand, let’s just say I’m breaking through their tough exterior through my irresistible charm.

Celebrities I’ve seen casually browsing the store include: Chelsea Handler, Nicki Hilton, Reese Witherspoon and Vivica Fox. Our special events also bring in lots of famous people as well- which you’d already know if you’ve been reading this blog.

As an intern, I am at the bottom of the food chain. The store is one of the places I get to exercise some form of power- usually over the customers. For example, for the Louboutin event I did a lot of the guest check-in and had to turn away crazy people trying to use fake names. However, some people in the party were just as crazy- one middle aged (and I’m assuming/hoping tipsy) woman slapped my butt when I told her I was part of the BG FBI. Yeesh.

The store is spacious and lavish, but unfortunately the stockrooms do not mirror this. While doing pulls I often go to stock rooms to find the correct merchandise. I’m not ashamed to say I’ve gotten lost before and have asked for help many times. The shoe stockroom is especially treacherous.  

So… why would I go home when I could just go to BG? Well for starters, it closes at 8pm.

Yesterday we had an event with shoe designer Alexandre Birman.
I was fortunate enough to be personally introduced to him by Brad Goreski. Upon hearing that I go to WashU (represent), he told me that STL actually used to be the shoe manufacturing capital of the US (think Brown Shoe Co. and Famous Barr). Who knew? Well, he knew I guess. I also learned that shoe manufacturing and design runs deep in his family. He was li-trally born in a shoe factory in Brazil (#GLAMOUR), he joked that his first crib was a shoebox. Whatta charmer.

The event itself was filled with waiters who looked like models (there must be a niche agency specializing in this breed, no complaining here), macaroons from Laduree of which I treated myself to heartily (see below) and champagne of which I kept at an arms length. 

The event, which took place in the shoe salon on the 2nd floor, was meant to celebrate the moving of Birman’s collection from 5F to 2 - a big deal. He’s playing with the big names in shoes now- think Louboutin, YSL, Prada, Chanel, Choo, Blahnik etc.

So Brad actually approached us, at least that is my perspective on it. Daniella thinks he came over to us because she was oogling him a little bit, but hey, whatever works. Am I right?

Anyway, we got to chatting and I asked him how his lunch was because I was in the elevator with him earlier in the day going up the 7th floor where the restaurant is. He said he remembered me from the elevator because of my necklace and proceeded to ask who makes it. Then I was like lolz to the cats, I made it over the summer in my infinite bordem and constant need to do crafts. Except I was way more eloquent than that, although still very truthful. He then (fairly strongly I might add) urged me to create more and sell them. So now I’m all like omgokaywhateveryousayiloveyou?  But really. He’s great.

Side note, but still related: I’m having a big moment right now with collared shirts and statement necklaces so… look out, world. Just kidding, the world don’t curr. Although it should.

Alright I’m going to stop rambling about being starstruck and just say that the event was quite lovely.

I have been forced by my wallet to learn to cook, well, “cook”. It is a very slow process.

Wow it sounds like I’m living like a queen, but I just went food shopping yesterday so it’s throwing the perspective off a lil bit. 

The point is, I’ve gone from eating out and eating the left overs as my next meal, to cooking every meal for myself except for once or twice a week… like today, I totally spoiled myself with a $2.50 falafel. The internal monologue was something like “hey self, you rock. be my valentine? how should we celebrate. let’s treat us to a falafel on the way home mmmm”

In terms of cooking… let’s just say I’ve gone from this:

Baby stepz! Also, my roommate is a mad good cook and brought half a dozen cook books. I’m hoping these factors prove to be a catalyst in my journey of becoming a (capital F, capital A) Functioning Adult.

But no, seriously. I went home for the first time since moving here this past weekend and have a new found and explicit love for dis place. This feeling may have been especially amplified after I went to the mall near my suburban home before noon on a Saturday (I had a genius bar appointment, ok?). It was a #dark place to be, not literally just figuratively. There’s just so much wrong with the way mall rats/suburban massachusetts pre-teens dress, makes me shudder. ANYWAY

I no longer have to religiously read street style blogs because it’s all here. New York has a very different ratio of beautiful people to non-beautiful people than the rest of the places I’ve lived in, especially STL (sorry guys). And even if people aren’t beautiful, they look unique and interesting. I have caught myself taking pictures of strangers way more than is socially acceptable- although if it were me I’d be flattered. ALSO it’s currently fashion week so the eye candy is in even great quantities.

Both of these photos were taken this morning on my way to work within 30 seconds of each other. That’s how much I love strangers (yeah, I heard it). Everyone is just so damn stylish!

Like I just said… it’s all here. This place literally contains the highest of the high and the lowest of the low. Infinitely expensive fine dining vs. Dollar Pizza. Park Avenue penthouses vs. those who are homeless. Bergdorf’s vs. The Dollar Store.

No city block, or at least no respectable city block, is complete without the corner deli. There is no reason you should ever have to walk more than one block for almost anything. Bonus: one of the deli’s near me is 24 hours and delivers. Not only can you get groceries, but toiletries, alcohol, spices, and a pseudo-meal of any kind.

The T in Boston closes at midnight and STL only has two subway lines (that eventually merge into one, wtf). Well, the subway here never closes. There are 24 subway lines. And one is usually a 2 minute wait away. There’s also a zillion buses but I have yet to explore that path (ha. literally).

I will gladly walk 30 minutes from point A to point B here. If you asked me to do that at school or at home you’d see a less happy version of me (it’s not pretty, you can confirm with my dad). Walking here is not actually a point A to point B experience because you walk by a zillion interesting things on your way to wherever (“wherever” for me is usually the subway. or the nail salon. I’m not sorry). 

Oh the things they’d say!

Actually, I have no idea how that would work and frankly it would be quite strange. The premise of this post is, most of the time I wear clothes. Just kidding. ALL the time. What am I? A nudist? That’s not chic. Anyway, here’s a peek at some of the stuff I wear to work everyday. Unfortunately I don’t have the time for these brief moments of vanity every morning, so you’ll just have to fill in the blanks with your imagination…

Luckily the office dress code is relatively relaxed- I like to think it’s pretty much everything and anything superior to the level of casual of jeans with a strong emphasis on looking stylish yet professional. Thank gawd it’s not something dressier because I do not have the stamina for heels everyday, especially while running around the office, the store, and between the two.

Seeing what people wear everyday is always fun and inspires me to be creative. However, it also makes me want to shop, real bad. Hoping to scratch that itch tomorrow.

As a PR intern, I do a lot of pulls… of my own hair! Just kidding, I’m not that stressed. Although I am sprouting (more) gray hairs. TMI? Too bad! This is my blog, you’re just readin’ it.

Anyway, a pull is directly related to pulling merchandise from the floor to be loaned to various publications for (usually) a specific photo shoot.

So how this usually works for me is… an editor contacts the BG PR department and we set up a time to meet with them in the store. I meet them (usually in the Prada handbag section or the Prada boutique. I know, I know, they’re trying to kill me. Prada is only my favorite brand), follow them around the store and take pictures of all the merchandise they are interested in borrowing. Then when they leave I scurry around all the appropriate stock rooms trying to find exactly what they are looking for (size, color, style, etc.) and bring it to another office to all be scanned and wrapped up by yours truly. Finally, it is left in the employee entrance to be picked up.

It sounds simple, but it gets tricky fast. Some rules:

• Fine jewelry can only be loaned out with the buyers’ approval and a certificate of insurance, we mean business
• Shoes can only be loaned out if not worn by models
• Some brands have a whole separate process you have to go through, like J. Mendel. But those furs are so luscious that it’s worth it.
• Only carry everything around with you through the stock rooms if you’re also training to be a body builder- luxury clothing is heavy
• Always check for sensors, your rookie mistake is immediately illuminated with the poor messenger beeps up the employee entrance

It’s funny because before this internship I just imagined magazine’s having these enormous and overflowing closets of amazingness that they owned a la Devil Wears Prada.

But no, that shit is hella borrowed!

Things I’ve learned about Brooklyn

• It’s less expensive to live there
• It’s the most populated of all five of the boroughs
• The peeps there are all very unique looking- for both the better and the worse
• My friends live there
• Many apartments have the luxury of a backyard, well a “backyard” in a New York way

This past weekend I had the pleasure of going to Williamsburg (a neighborhood within Brooklyn for those of you wondering. bonus fact: I just learned it used to be spelled with an “h” at the end #dropknowledge) twice.

My first visit was for a party/series of performances. See below for various artwork on display and performed during the night. 

One piece that was hung up in the “living room” which was really set up more like a gallery.

Another piece hung up. I should mention that the moment we walked into the party, party hats were put on our heads and a semi-surprise polaroid picture was taken of us #sobrooklyn (side note: I don’t care about using hashtags outside of twitter so, yeah). Then the party hats were taken back unfortunately, wah. But what a fun way to be welcomed into a party, am I right?!

Hung up in the bathroom. I dunno, I like it, man.

The first performance piece took place in their backyard outside, where said performer (err.. I’m not trying to sound pretentious, I just lost the Playbill) did a 12 minute dance piece while wearing spandex and a mask a la the Jabberwockies (America’s Best Dance Crew, anyone?). 

Religious home stuff always interests me. There was a whole lil table of these Jesus candles.

The 2nd performance was on the piano. He played us a whole bunch of songs and I ended up being front row, and by “ended up”, I mean it was located right next to the bar. The songs were beautiful and honestly, there are few things greater than watching a passionate artist play while knowing you can’t imitate what he or she is doing even if you tried.

Oh ps he was super hot too. And had an accent. 

When all that was over… J Cole and I went to Vanessa’s for dumplings. I’m seriously becoming an expert on Late Night Food. That’s right, it’s capitalized because it’s a real genre— not just of food, but of my life. Yeesh.

Sunday we went to Steph/Emily/Lizzy/Penny’s for the Super Bowl. Side note: Penny is their cat, but I love it just as much as I love them so, it’s her apartment too. Continuing, we failed at watching a good chunk of the game, damn buffering. The best part of the game, night, weekend was watching Steph eat 51 packets of ketchup (courtesy of White Castle) because the Patriots lost. Lemme just say- that girl is a champ.

If the Giant’s had lost, Jackson would have had to eat a full cup of sriracha sauce. I think Steph had it worse.

• There’s no way I’m joining a gym here, they are expensive and some are weird. Example: there is a gym near me called David Barton Gym, it looks like night club and I am not exaggerating.

  

  
  Uh… I can only imagine their clientele. There is also a chain called Dolphin Fitness Club that is $130 for 6 months but that’s more LTR (longterm relationship, duh) than I’m into.
  Instead, I’ve started going to Yoga to the People. It’s a donation based yoga studio and always leaves me sore the next day, in the best way possible. 
• Mamoun’s falafels are $2.50, given to you within 30 seconds of ordering and qualify as a meal. Oh ps, they’re award winning. Amazing
  

  

   
• Sit in my apartment in the dark. Electricity costs money so…. being nocturnal is cool ‘n stuff now.
• Take advantage of free food in the office. There’s candy at the secretary’s desk, I think there is an unwritten (maybe written??) rule about this- all secretary’s must have candy. Regardless, I eat it on occasion. At the events we host and I work at there is, at the very least, finger food, coffee and sometimes even a full dinner so that’s always grand. 
• Utilize the BG store. As I said in a previous post, I got my makeup done in the BG Beauty Level during my lunch break before an event and it cost me $free.99. Then I scurried over to the perfumes and got a hearty (but not overwhelming, that’s not chic) spritz of my favorite Hermes perfume.

During my few weeks working at BG and living in New York, I have been able to meet and see many high status people in the fashion industry, many of who I greatly admire.

The first thing I’m going to say is, people are so not as tall as I thought they’d be. Alina Cho from CNN was wearing (at least) 6 inch Louboutins and I was still a little taller than her (granted, I was wearing heels too, but not nearly as high). Additionally, Jason Wu and Diane von Furstenburg were also about my height. This sounds silly but it makes meeting them a little more “real”. On the other hand, Karlie Kloss is way taller, thinner and more beautiful than I had thought. So… let’s just say meeting models isn’t as “real”.

Secondly, I have to stop judging these people off of how I see them on TV or elsewhere. For example, Rachel Zoe came in the other day to show us (“us” being the store sales associates and executive team) her current spring collection and she was incredibly and surprisingly down to earth. Also, she looks way better in person than in magazines… maybe she got some work done… either way, girlfriend looks good.

The point is, most of my interactions with big name fashion people have surprised me, in the best way possible. Here’s to the next ones.

The Louboutin madness has finally subsided. Hold on to your hats, because I’m about to give you the full lowdown of these last couple days, photo diary style:

The above two pictures show the main room installation in the luxury room (yes, that’s its name). It was designed and installed by Frank Alexander and his team. See all the Louboutin boxes? Guess who were the interns running around the stock rooms trying to find those? Ding ding ding.

For the shoe signing on Tuesday, this was created and installed in the shoe salon. The 20 pairs of shoes here are part of Louboutin’s capsule collection, celebrating his 20 years of shoe making.

The beginning of a very, very long line. Those in line had all bought a brand new pair of Louboutins that day to get personally signed by Christian Louboutin. Although, maybe the better word is “decorated”, he definitely went to town on a few of them. My job during this madness was monitoring the front of the line— a job harder than you would think.

The girl getting her shoe signed (on the sole’s arch of course) had been waiting in line for four hours up until the event, that’s dedication. Fun fact: see all those Sharpie paint markers? Yeah, I prepped them. Funny how many small details there are for special events that I would have never thought of before this internship.

The signing went on for 3.5 hours and Christian was in great spirits the entire time. He had full conversations with every woman who got a pair of shoes signed and spent time signing and decorating, using lots of colors and small designs. Some women who bought a wedge shoe got the side of the shoe signed instead of the bottom, that’ll definitely catch your eye on the street.

I apologize for the vanity shot, but hey, this is my blog so Imma do what I want. Anyway, for Wednesday night’s event, the in-store cocktail party celebrating Louboutin’s 20 Anniversary, I got my face done up all professionally during my lunch break courtesy of the BG Beauty Level. ‘Twas a first for me but definitely not the last, that ish lasted 12 hours! Plus, I love that kinda thing.

Louboutin’s arrival was (duh) well received but I managed to snap this shot amidst the craziness. Other notable (aka who I recognized) guests included: Alina Cho from CNN, Linda Fargo (duh), Selita Ebanks, Michelle Harper, The Man Repeller, Tinsley Mortimer, Wendy Williams, and Bill Cunningham. 

Party time!

The night finally ended when I returned home at 12:20am, had a great time… but, my feet have never hated me more. And I wasn’t even wearing Louboutins. I need to know the secret to wearing heels, and I need to know it fast. 

I am doing a full time unpaid internship and living in New York. I’ll let you fill in the blanks and help you out because, the conclusion is: my money must be spent wisely. 

• Eat out less and even if I do, I always take home the leftovers. Think about it, a $16 spicy chicken ramen bowl at Momofuku is really only $8 because hey, you just made that thing into two meals. *Don’t worry, the portions are big there.
• Walk. I have legs, and I use them. It’s good exercise, it’s scenic, and it’s a decent way to kill time. Triple win. 
• Shop at Trader Joe’s. I really don’t know how they do it (I tried to find out via wikipedia, I obviously need to do more research) but their prices are SO LOW. Additionally, I’m pretty much vegetarian except for when I eat out because 1. meat is relatively expensive and 2. I don’t really know how to cook it (more on that later).
• Starbucks refills. This bullet should probably be “Own your own coffee machine” but I’m not quite there yet. So, in the mean time. Did you know Starbucks does (almost) free refills? I may bend the rules a little bit in my favor but hey, it’s necessary.
• Paint samples are free at any hardware or home improvement store. I used them to decorate an entire wall of my bedroom (see below). Oh and while I’m at it, christmas lights! I literally stole them right off my family christmas tree (sorry dad) before I moved here.

  

• Craigslist. Alright take this one with a grain of salt but this site rules, especially in New York when people are constantly moving apartments. I got my mirrors, microwave and bedside table through here PLUS, BONUS, everyone I met was super nice and interesting.
• Work the Sugar Daddy. Ok this one isn’t from personal experience (fortunately? unfortunately?). But disregarding how sketchy it could be, you know your bank account would love you.

New window installations for our Christian Louboutin events this week, yeah eventS, plural. Major.

On Tuesday he’ll be doing a shoe signing and Wednesday night is the big in-store cocktail party. What does it say if I am most excited to meet The Man Repeller at the party than anything else? Oops, sorry not sorry.

Also, side note: is there a sly way to take an iphone picture of someone yet? I’m not very subtle, in most areas of my life. If yes: hit me up.

Anyway, this picture makes this lady look unique but in fact, I see these women all the time (read: typical BG customer). Despite this, I can’t help but wonder about the lives these women lead. How do they spend their days? How old is that fur coat? Do you know how old school glam you look? Do you know how warm you look? Do you like sharing? How long have you lived in New York? Who are you married to? What other stores do you frequent? How often do you get your hair done? I could go on, but the point is, people intrigue me… and on a more shallow level, floor length fur is mad luxurious. 

Below is a list of some of the things I would do if I had an unlimited supply of cash in this city. 

• Go to The Dry Bar: where you can get a blowout and a cocktail. How hadn’t this been popularized before??
• Ride in cabs, all the time. I had the luxury of taking my first cab NYC cab ride the other day (luckily I got to expense it via BG) and lemme tell you… it was AWESOME. 20 minutes each way of alone time. Also, the cabs here have TVs in them. We are most definitely NOT in St. Louis anymore, my friends. 
• Get manicures e’ry week. I’m not that girly but I’m a sucker for these things. They just make me feel so clean! Before coming here I tried to justify it with “I’d rather get my nails done and just skip a meal”. Then I realized how much more I walk here than… anywhere, and that girlfriend needs her sustenance.
• Go on a BG shopping spree. Let me tell you, working near so much luxury is HARD, especially when you don’t have an income. Everything feels so lavish and throughout the course of the day I manage to delude myself into believing that I have the funds for what I desire, it’s quite torturous.
• A better internet connection. I’ll never take WUFI-S for granted again, especially now that I’ve taken it upon myself to watch the entire series of Lost.
• Live in Eataly. Imagine Italy, then imagine it all in one place. It includes a market selling every kind of food to bring home or eat there and several restaurants and cafes. People know I’ve been there from the DNA they found in the trail of drool I left there.

Part of a new window installation inspired by the Year of the Dragon. Inside the store now hangs a giant paper dragon from the ceiling on the first floor. I can’t wait to see how it all pulls together for our big China event this Tuesday night.

Whilst organizing the archives, Daniella and I found some memorable things. Unfortunately I took this picture before reading the beginning of the article, and I soon learned that the headline was misleading- whatevuh, still interesting.

There were lots and lots of Fendi fur pictures from the 70’s and 80’s— look at how young Karl looks!

Wish you could see the image that’s on this (it was a bottle of lighter fluid). But I laughed pretty hard at this, love when fashion has a sense of humor.

Another article from the BG archive, someone likes gossip! Also I’m glad to see that we’ve progressed from “had her face lifted” to “had a facelift”. Lolz.

Thursday morning was the first event I was apart of, it was a Melanoma event in the Goodman Cafe on the beauty level. Daniella and I checked people in, this was our view while we waited. Not so bad, eh?

Oh and this is what was jchillin above us. Fun fact: the store used to be the location of the old Vanderbilt mansion. Funner fact: Anderson Cooper’s grandmother lived there.

Got to meet the fabulous Wouri, self-described fashion savant, while doing a pull. Really hoping I get to work with him again!

Wrapping up another pull on Friday. I’m blinded by the colors and textures in the best way possible. Also check out that J Mendel fur coat…. so lavish.

And last but not least… I made a new lil friend in Tom Ford on the 2nd floor! Unfortunately we had to part after 15 minutes.

Starkly different, equally catchy. I was recently exposed to K-Pop, not in it’s entirety because I can already tell that would be overwhelming. But I’m not ashamed to say that there is now a soft spot in my heart for Girls’ Generation. The second song was showed to me by a friend from school, it gets better with every play.

Never take for granted the people who surround you in your life. They’ll drive you crazy but at the end of the day it’s all worth it. I feel so lucky to be surrounded by the wonderful people inside Delta Sigma Pi, they’ve made the long stressful road of planning banquet more than worth it.

I’m getting sentimental (ew). But, I’m not ready to leave school and I’m not ready to stay. I want to be in this semester forever (strictly socially, I’m never doing this academically/extra curricularly again).

Finals are coming, finals are coming! And by coming, I mean, they are here. As of this moment I have 7 deliverables left— three exams, three papers, and an evaluation.
